Blue Calash or Ugly
1850s

If you look at Francis Powell Frith's genre painting of Margate Sands painted in 1851-4, you will see all the children wearing uglies and some of the women. Attached to the front of a bonnet they shielded the wearer's eyes from the sun's glare. How on earth they were held in place is a marvel because the canes are so springy and the silk so delicate.  They are always found in this mid blue silk.
