Central Asian Susani

Fabulous.  This is not so old but the quality is really good and the colours wonderful. Be good on a bed or as a hanging. This type of hanging was made as dowry piece with various members of one family embroidering a strip which were then sewn together. Susani is from the Persian word Suzan which means needle and this example was hand embroidered.

Four paths strewn with rows of formal flowerheads lead from a central large circle filled with stylised flowers, the spandrels with larger flowerheads encircled by leaves, a wide border with more flowerheads and leaves, outer guard stripe of green leaves, all in thick floss silks on a natural cotton ground, 6ft 6 in x 5ft; 200 x 1.50 m
