Dwarf's Corset
1890's

Well I found out! This was for a dwarf, a very small woman. Quite incredible.

The outside is in very good condtion but the inside is quite worn. At first I thought it was for a shop mannequin. Any suggestions? This would be good for an accurate pattern.

During the 1880's and 90's newly perfected embroidery and flossing machines took over hand methods of embellishing corsets.

Description

of black sateen cotton, with eau de nil silk flossing, heavily boned with delicate baleen, hand made ecru lace trimming to the top threaded with eau de nil satin ribbon, the front fastened with metal stud and loops, lacing holes to the back (new laces), the inside of a grosgrain silk, machine sewn, stiffened bosom pads trimmed with two rows of similar lace, the front busk 8 1/2 in/22 cm ; waist closed 16 in/40 cm.

Condition

As you will see from the photos the inside is badly damaged with baleen whalebones popping out all over the place. The silk is also damaged. As already mentioned the outside is in very good condition.
