French Waistcoat
1760s/80

Very attractive super quality lamellae brocade woven with gold and silver, with a lovely "skirt".

Marvellous brocade woven with silver and gold thread, which would have twinkled by candlelight. there is no sign that this waistcoat had sleeves.

Description

Front opening, sleeveless, with gently flaring skirts with slanting shaped faux pockets, the back skirts with a central opening and side pleats fastened with a self covered button, silk ribbon ties to inside lower skirt, lined in fine cream silk.

The brocade woven with gold ribbons, gently curving stems with shaded pink, blue and yellow flowers and fruits, all on a woven silver thread ground.

Shoulder to hem 21 1/2 in;55 cm.

Condition

Very very good. The fabric has been well pieced at the back.

The sides have been taken in, but as they have used linen thread, perhaps they were for letting out at a later date, if the person got fatter!
