Gloria in Excelsis Deo
Late 19th c

Gloria in Excelsis Deo or Glory to God in the highest is a Christian hymn. This is a really lovely Arts & Crafts embroidery probably worked by a talented amateur.

Description

Gloria in Excelsis Deo .The madonna and child fill the picture, their features finely embroidered, the madonna wearing a turquoise and gold brocade gown embellished with gold wrapped silk, her shawl finely quilted with pale terracotta silks, ivory ribbed silk veil and baby robes, the background of pale grey linen,  the ground filled with embroidered flowers in soft orange, yellow, mauve, turquoise, red and ivory on a dark brown linen ground, the frame and lettering in gold wrapped silk couching.

16 x 11 1/2 in; 42  x 29 cm.

Condition

The pale linen ground was originally a bright blue, as can be seen at the very edges.   The gold work top right has come away, and a few stitches will sort this. I can get this done. There are two feint marks to the top of this piece. I feel if a mount was made and the piece framed one would be hidden and the other would be half hidden. Unfortunately the piece has been stretched over cardboard and glued.  My suggestion is to put the embroidery into a frame and enjoy it.
