Clearly these were protective. The man would have covered the sleeves of his good shirt with these. The wider linen top section with three buttonholes would have been attached to buttons on the lower arm a shirt or possibly threaded with a linen tie. The lower two buttonholes were for simple cuff links.
 

Description

The linen tops with three hand worked buttonholes, above fine linen pleating, the lower band with a buttonhole either end.

9 in x 11 in; 23 cm x28 cm wide.
