Queen Anne Embroidered Petticoat
1710s

I feel sure that this most unusual length was destined for a petticoat, but never made up. The middle of the embroidery is not the centre of the design. It would look good reinstated as a petticoat with added plain linen for the back.  Known as false quilting because although there are two layers of fabric, the linen top layer and the cotton underlayer there is no wadding. Yellow silk garments and bedhangings were popular during the early 18th c. The yellow silk used was copying Indian muga yellow silk embroidery from Dacca, Bengal. Beautiful quality. Yellow was a very popular colour in the early 18th century.

Description

The white linen embroidered in minute stitches in bright yellow silk with scrolling stylised flowers, leaves to a horizontal panel two thirds down the fabric, the top and bottom with a trellis type design, the upper part with flower sprigs.

Length 37 1/2 in; 96 cm

Width 6 ft 1 in; 1.85 m

Condition

Very very good. A few marks. You should be able to see from the photos that there is slight discolouration of colour to the top and bottom. I think this was because it was turned under. Ask for photos.
