Spatterdashes
c 1800

These are very difficult to describe! They must have kept the wearer extremely cosy. I am not sure if they are military. So unusual with tab to connect to the breeches buttons.

From the Baines Family of Bell Hall, Naburn, Yorkshire.

Description

Of densely woven wool, eleven buttons, the opposite side with concealed buttonholes,  a strap with two buttonholes, and a flap to cover the boot, linen lining in parts, all hand stitched.

Length 31 in; 78 cm

Condition

There are moth tracts where the larvae has eaten the surface of the wool.  One hole 2 cm dia. I have had these profesionally cleaned. Two of the buttons at the top of one gaiter are different, so have been replaced. The moths have eaten more in the second gaiter, where in parts you can see the twill weave of the wool.
