Delightful hand block print caracao.
The white cotton ground hand block printed with six small flower sprays interspersed between smaller sprays, including roses, all in shades of pink, pale blue, green, mauve, bronze, black, the large scoop neck with a drawstring at the neck, three brass hooks and eyes to the front opening, short sleeves, the back with the skirt gathered into pleats central back and each side, lined with a coarse cotton.
Shoulder to hem 16 in; 40 cm
Bust approx 30 in; 76 cm
Very good. The caracao looks clean and fresh. There are two very small slight areas of wear on the right hand side, when you look at the piece, 1/2 cm. There are slight pale markings to the top left hand shoulder and on the back, but they are very feint. The drawstring is a later replacement.
A similar caracao is held in the Williamsburg collection. ACC.2000-86. Also see What Clothes Reveal by Linda Baumgarten p 121.
