Leek Embroidery Society
1880s

Probably a border for a tablecloth. Very similar to Tanjore Lotus* Using Tasar or tussur silk threads and ground silk from Indian, dyed by Thomas Wardle in Art shades.



Elizabeth Wardle who formed The Leek Embroidery Society also produced a replica of the Bayeux Tapestry (actually an embroidery) in 1885, now in Reading Museum. The original can of course be seen in the British Museum for the next few months.

Cataloguing

Embroidered with diagonal sprays of flowers in red, ivory and pink with bronze leaves, between borders of small flower and leaf meanders, all on a terracotta tussore silk ground.

Condition

Very good. Would look good framed. We can mount the embroidery on acid free board for you, ready for you to take to a framer.
