Sicilian Chalice Cover
c 1700

Rather amazing silver and gold embroidery with corals. I wonder why the left hand half was worked in gold and the right hand silver thread.

Cataloguing

The mid-green silk embroidered and couched with a pair of birds, one in silver, the other silver gilt perched on exotic branching foliage, covered in small corals, all above fanned out tail feathers, surorunded with more flowers and foliage, all worked in several thickness of silver/gilt thread, the background worked in a silver trellis.

The embroidery 18 x 16 in; 45 x 42 cm

The silk 22 in x 20 in; 55 x 51 cm selvedge to selvedge.

Condition

Very good. You will see some of gilt filé thread has come unwound at the left hand and central base area to reveal the inner silk. Another couple of places to the top area.
