Indian Chintz Bonnets
18th c/later

These delightful bonnets for small girls made up of carefully pieced panels of ther same Indian chintz. The fabric was of course very precious and any offcuts from robes or garments would have been carefully used on small items. 



The Fries Museum at Leeuwarden shows that garments were cut from palampore and yardage. Wealthy families seem to have stored great quantities of the Indian textiles for making the costumes long after the cloth was actually patterned in India.*


Cataloguing

Resist and mordant dyed red and brown with blue pencilled (Kolam) leaves and details. edged with typical woven braid, lined with cotton.



Two pieced from eight pieces of fabric, the rest from three pieces. Some still with glazing. 


Condition

Very good apart from one of the pieced ones which has two small holes to one side of the chintz. Ask for photos.
