Rare Under Waistcoat
Early 19th century

Fine quality and very rare despite the condition.


Cataloguing

A slightly raised neckline, front panels of shaded  pale blue/green woven worsted wool with a ivory silk stripe, the edges and facings woven with light gold coloured oak leaves and medals containing a portrait?, attached to a white cotton base, the back with ties.



Back collar to hem 16 in; 40 cm



Front top collar to whie pointed fron hem 20 in 50 cm


Condition

You will see from the photos the condition is not good. The top right hand front oak leaf panel is badly damaged. There are further much smaller holes to other areas. The natural cotton backing and collar are lightly dirty. But it is rare!

A History of Men's Fashions by Farid Chenoune p 46 which illustrates the portrait by Sophie Rude of the actor Wolf, called Bernard 1819-1823 wearing a red under waistcoat. It notes inner vests were fashionable during the French Restoration.
