Girl's Chinese Silk
1770's

What a colour. This is wonderful. Very rare to find a garment made from Chinese silk which would have been imported by The British East India Company. The young lady who owned this must have been very wealthy to be wearing expensive silk made for the export market. Please ignore the greenish yellow photos. This jacket is pure bright Imperial yellow.

Cataloguing

jacket, of imperial yellow silk damask, the design with full blown flowers, their stems wound with leaves, with scoop neck and front opening with hooks and eyes, full skirt to the sides and back, the back with a central seam and a lower horizontal waist seam, simple sleeves with back seam, lined with same shade of yellow glazed linen, chest 28 in or 72 cm; waist 23 in or 60 cm; length back 16 in or 41 cm.

Condition

Very good. There are two beautiful darns under the right arm and a very small one to the top back shoulder. The back left hand side has a little feint blackish marking which could probably be removed by a conservator) but fine to leave as it hardly shows. Back left hand panel near waist has a feint mark. Small darn within a skirt pleat. Front right hand skirt has a little light brown markings. If you cannot see these in the enlarged photos on the site do ask for close ups.
