Imbecile Spencer
c 1830

Beautiful spencer of fine muslin typical of the Romantic era, with unusual horizontal gathering. We do not have the right size mannequin for this spencer hence the combination of photos. Huge sleeves at this period were called imbecile sleeves.


Cataloguing

Of light, white muslin delicately gathered into horizontal ruching at front and back, wide pointed neckline and cuffs finished with piping, centre panel seams trimmed with muslin tape and double piping, full gigot sleeves tightly gathered into the shoulder, back fastening, small black hooks and thread loops, two hooks and eyes on the high waistband.

In very good condition with minor damage: one small rip at back neckline, small tears at the waistband near to lowest set of hooks and bars, small dot of discoloration on the front of left sleeve.
