Joseph Chanel manufactured Anthony Berrus designed shawls from 1857. He worked from 16 Rue Neuve-Saint-Eustache, Paris.


Cataloguing

The overall design woven on a Jacquard loom in wool and silk with a central four leafed flower, each end with elegant elongated pines with elaborate curving tips, surrounded by Eastern flowers and foliage, flanked by further longer pines, arrows and rows of stylised flowerheads, the borders with a repeting medallion design, the ends with epaulette borders, with the initials JC  at each corner, all in red, orange, crimson, green, ochre, mid blue, black, the reverse with a sewn on cotton label stamped in blue ink GPG, 66103 tapis 1236 , 11ft x 5ft 3 in; 3.35 x1.6 m
