A Mughal Summer Carpet
early 18th c

Summer carpets were used by the Mughal court and placed on cool marble terraces and in pavillions. The design of cusped medallions was influenced by Persian carpets of the sixteenth century. A high quality of embroidery and charmingly naive design.


Cataloguing

The white cotton ground embroidered with a central oval cusped medallion and four quarter medallions, all surmounted by birds on flower blossom, the medallions filled with more birds and flowers, the central ground with a repeat pattern in rows of five different upright flower sprigs, the borders with three rows of similar sprigs between guard stripes of meander flowerheads and leaves, all in madder, indigo, green/blue and soft yellow, using a tambour needle.
