Scarlet Under Waistcoat
Early 19th c

This rare underwaistcoat has been in my freezer for the past two weeks!  It is always a good idea to pop items in a plastic bag and into the freezer, if you are worried they might have moth eggs.  Museums automatically do this.

Layered clothing was usual and this wool under waistcoat would have supplied a cosy extra layer.

Provenance: The Baines family, Bell Hall, Naburn,Yorkshire.

Cataloguing

Short of natural wool with a scarlet facecloth collar and lapels, the first four buttons covered in red, the last three in white linen, embroidered button holes,  the back with two original linen tape ties.

Back neck nape to hem 20 in; 50 cm

Condition

The red facecloth has no holes, but slightly grubby round the inner neck area.  The natural wool is in dreadful condition!  Ask for more photos.

A History of Men's Fashions by Farid Chenoune p 46 which illustrates the portrait by Sophie Rude of the actor Wolf, called Bernard 1819-1823 wearing a red under waistcoat. It notes inner vests were fashionable during the French Restoration.
