Quilted Gentleman's Cap
18th c

Point de Marseille men’s house cap from France. The workmanship is exquisite and It is likely this was from the professional workshops in Marseille.



In the 17th century it became fashionable for young father's to wear a special, richly decorated cap when a child was born. This was worn for the first ten days after the birth. the period when friends and relatives would visit. These caps continued to be worn into the 18th century.


Cataloguing

Four segments each with a stylised large leafed flower surrounded by smaller leaves, flowers and buds, in trapunto cording, drawn theadwork and minute embroidered French knots,  worked with cotton on a cotton ground, each segment curing into the centre, under the brim more diamond patterned quilting, the upturned and shaped brim with similar work with pomegrantates, flowers, leaves, lined in fine cotton. 


Condition

Excellent. Probably relined.
