Kashmir Shawl Border
1820s

The shawl end has clearly been rescued from a very damaged shawl. It would look good mounted onto a stretcher and hung. We can do this for you. This has been cleaned and is from a collector.

Cataloguing

The end border finely woven with seven botehs, each outlined in ivory pashmina, with an ususual bendng tip with three inner sections, the base of the boteh with a tree emerging into the first third, with dense foliage above, the spaces between the botehs similar, a guard stripe above the botehs filled with slanting stylised flowers, a part border below, in blue, green, red, saffron, on a natural pashmina ground, all edged in green twill weave tape,

Condition

Clearly the lower border is only half the depth. There has been a extremely clever repair to near the base of the second boteh in from the right.  There is a small hole to the top border 7 in; 17 cm from the left.  Also another to top border 20 in; 50 cm from the left hand edge. We can repair these if you wish. If the piece was to be mounted on a stretcher, with a suitably coloured fabric below, these would not show, and there would be no need to repair.
