Civil War Summer Coat
1860s

The linen is very good quality. Bought in the USA. I don't have a large enough mannequin, but hope you get the idea of cut.


Cataloguing

Of white thick linen, smallish revers, one linen covered button (2.5 cm), stitching marks to the front right hand side, revealing an inside patch pocket, a low waist seam, above a small pocket on the left hand side, straight sleeves, the cuff with a V turning, the back with curving seams from central waist to back shoulders, two similar buttons, the skirt pleated with concealed cotton back pockets, all hand and machine stitched, most of the seams have been tape covered with twill weave cotton.

Sleeve: 25in; 64 cm (from shoulder seam to end of sleeve)



Front Length: 29 in; 74 cm (from shoulder to hem)

Condition

Very good condition. The material is nice and strong! The condition is remarkable for its age. There has been no attempt to launder the coat. I feel a good wash would freshen the piece.  There is some very light soiling here and there. One inside skirt pocket has torn and come away from the inside seam 4 in; 10 cm. The front of each sleeve has a 1 inch; 3 cm and a 1 1/2 inch ; 4 cm which have come unstitched.
