Crimson Damask
1740s

This is a piece of typical 18th century silk damask, which might have been used to line the walls of a grand room or used for upholstery. There is almost one full repeat to the length.



In the V & A there is a piece of similar damask which came from the Ante Room to the State Apartments at Hampton Court, which were furnished by King William III and Queen Mary, woven in 1680s in Genoa, Italy.* There were many reproductions made over the centuries.


Cataloguing

woven on a hand loom with a full horizontal design of exotic flowering flowers surrounded by scrolling leaves in a hurge vertical repeat, green and neutral selvedge banding.



3ft 3 in x 21 in;  1.01 m x 53 cm



Verical repeat 3ft 5 in or 1.05 m. So this piece is 4 cm off a whole repeat.


Condition

Excellent condition and strong enough for chair covering or cushions.
