Girl's Indian Muslin Dress
1920s

A charming dress perhaps for an eight year old girl.  It just needs a satin ribbon slotted through the slits at the top of the skirt. I wonder if she lived in India and this was made for her.  I have never seen a dress like this before so I would imagine this was the case. There is a name tag inside K J Chamberlin.  This is such a sweet dress and would look lovely with a satin ribbon threaded through the slits. The pointed cuffs are in a tambour technique, but clearly are part of the original dress. The muslin is fairly loosely woven.

Cataloguing

The muslin with a high waist with a central inverted V embroidered in white cotton with flat flowerheads, their centres with drawnwork flanked by fine pintucks, a row of drawnwork to the high waist above slits (for a ribbon) and pintucks, back fastening with poppers,  the hem with a further nine triangles of embroidery, the slightly gathered sleeves with pointed cuffs with tambour embroidery.

Shoulder to hem: 30 in; 76 cm.

High waist 31 in; 80 cm.

Condition

Very good condition. The little pointed cuffs need a stitch or two. There is one hole to one cuff, which could easily be repaired.  The front has three very small areas where the weft threads have parted. The back central seam has two areas where the muslin is coming away from the seam. A few stitches would sort it.
