Ramoneur Caracao
1810

Marvellous unusual print with a slight glaze. The shape of the garment is also very attractive and would be good for copying.

The fabric is French ramoneur (chimney sweep meaning a dark background) hand block printed cotton with details pencilled in green.

Cataloguing

A linear hand block printed design with a repeating small deep pink bell type flower and grape like leaf (1 inch; 2cm) on a black ground, alternating with white delicate flower sprays, all on a chocolate brown cotton.

A scoop neck with shaped front facings from the back over the shoulder and gently loosened to the lower front, four brass hooks and eyes,  three quarter sleeves, the back with square neck, a centre V shape section to the lower waist, skirts flaring out, lined with cotton.

Shoulder to hem 20 in; 50 cm.

Condition

There is fading. Originally the brown ground was a bitter chocolate. It still is in part, but now some areas faded to a milk chocolate shade. This can be seen in the pleated sides.  A little darm under one arm, but difficult to see. The inside lining is grubby looking.
