Hexagon patchwork is apparently very unusual in Holland, most patchwork being pieced from triangles. A selection of delightful prints, including a piece of dessins geometrique, 1790-5 from Jouy, France, found in An Moonen's second book on Dutch Quilts p 142. Some lapis prints in the style that Deryn O’Connor dated from period 1812-1825*. The indigo resist prints also suggest a similar date. There is also a piece of Indian hand painted chintz and a piece of Indian hand block print on coarse cotton. The dark brown pieces are ramoneur (chimney sweep) print from Alsace, known in Holland as nachtgrond sits (night ground chintz)
The coverlet made from seventy hexagons 2 3/4 in/7 cm, all of printed cottons, mainly roller printed but with some hand blocks and an Indian chintz print and a coarse Indian block print, no backing, 20 x 17 in/52 x 43 cm
General fading and some have wear. One has a paint mark, another holes. Ask for photos.
The piece comes from a family in Delft called Israels bought at auction last year in Zeeland.
