Beautiful rich colouring woven with a gold metallic stripe. Almost a changeable silk with red glimpses.
As you will see the gown is not in the best of conditions, but could be good as a pattern, or for a conservation project. The ruched sleeves with their frills are glorious.
The bodice with large neckline edged with a gathered frill, front closure opening down to the extended front , the sleeves ruched to the lower area and with frills, the back bodice with pleating from sleeve seams down through the skirt, the skirt tightly cartridge pleated, the bodice lined with linen, five tapes attached to the inside skirt (for pulling into a polonaise), the lower hem lined with a linen.
As you will probably see the gown is not in great condition! The gown has probably been altered for fancy dress. The front left hand bodice closure has been cut and there is a tear where it is coming away from the skirt, same other side. The front opening has been machine stitched. There is staining underarms and great patches. There are some pieces of fabric in the sleeves, which could be removed for some conservation. The neck frill is a little worn at the front. The skirt has some tarnishing here and there and there are a couple of dark smallish marks. The hem is rubbed from dragging on the floor.
