The square with a riot of wonderful shapes and colours incuding a boteh or pine shape, exotic Indian flowers and leaves, using twisted and floss silks in a polychrome palette, the rich velvet border of old gold, braid and tassels to match the embroidery in soft shades of sage and bronze, backed with a dull green cotton sateen.
3ft; 90 cm square.
Excellent. Perhaps never used. Amazingly only one small tassel missing.

A really beautiful and well embroidered piece. This was used for a small table in the late 19th century when Anglo Indian embroidery was popular. Produced by gifted amateur needlewoman using either a printed handkerchief base (often produced in Manchester for the export Indian market to be used as kerchiefs), or embroidered on a woven ground. This piece is worked on a woven wool printed ground, which looks like Paisley design and one can catch glimpses of. Popular during the Arts and Crafts period.
