Arts & Crafts Bag
c 1900

I could not resist this sweet bag, despite the damage. It is embroidered in 17th century style. I think it would be perfect for copying as a kit embroidery.

Description

with coiling leafy stems enclosing a central Tudor rose, with pinks (carnations), harebells, cornflowers, a total of seventeen different flower heads, in blue, green, terracotta, pink, lemon twisted silks, on a cream sateen ground, the top and bottom bound with embroidered braid in blue, green and grey, the closure with blue grey rings and cords, lined in blue silk.

Condition

You should be able to see the top part of the bag is quite badly damaged and needs conserving. There is also damage lower down. I am pretty sure the cream silk sateen has rotted in parts, due to the salts used in the making of the silk. The lining has some marks but is sound.
