I have included these lengths here because they were made for the export market.
Magnificent and rare furnishing lengths hand painted in China around Guangdong (Canton) province, for the export market. What is remarkable is that every bouquet on each length is different, the outline being hand drawn and then hand coloured. The Chinese home market were not interested in such designs. Each drop has nine different bouquets, alternating with two smaller, then a larger and so on. It is extremely rare to find lengths of hand painted silk produced for furnishing and more usual to find hand painted dress silk. I think this fabric must have been destined for bed curtains for a four poster bed. The colour palette is typical of colours used for export textiles. I have not seen such a larger design before, so presumably painted for a special order. Occasionally in country houses Chinese export embroidered bed hangings can be found, but I have never seen painted hangings.
These came from an unknown Scottish baronial house. I would imagine at some time in the 20th century the lady of the house found this painted silk in a trunk and decided to have it made into curtains! We have unpicked them.
