A typical corner motif from a palampore, hand drawn and painted, resist and mordant dyed, made for and influenced by the Western market and produced on the Coromandel Coast, India.
A cornucopia with diagonal leaves filled with a huge display of roses and exotic Eastern flowers, hand drawn and painted, resist and mordant dyed, in shades of madder, indigo and magnesium (aubergine) on a natural fine cotton, one panel with a wavy rope type border.
24 x 20 1/2 in; 62 x 51 cm
All the aubergine flowers have a little wear, due to the mordant in the dye. Slightly faded due to washing. Small slight, light marks near couple of flowers, where dye has leaked, I would imagine.
The enthusiasm for chintz was that is was washable and this has been washed.
