Indian Chintz Panel
1775 - 1800

Wonderful design and colours. Made for and influenced by the Western market, produced on the Coromandel Coast, south-east India.  Good to see the drawing in a couple of places.

Description

The panel with a cornucopia with diagonal leaves filled with a huge display of roses and exotic Eastern flowers, hand drawn and painted, resist and mordant dyed, in shades of madder, indigo and magnesium (aubergine) on a natural fine cotton

24 x 20 1/2 in; 62 x 51 cm

Condition

There is a hole to one of the centre group of three five stared flowers. The other two painted in magnesium (augergine) are also worn. The whole piece has been tacked to a backing cotton so looks very good. Some fading.
