Trapunto Baby Cover
1740s

This Dutch 18th century baby's bakker covered the swaddled baby. The cover or wikkelkleed  is made from the loveliest trapunto quilted bedcover, which was worked to a very high standard. The background of finely quilted waves reminds me of Chinese wave design.  The cording in the photo, appears to be inverted instead of raised. A trick of the camera. A really fantastic piece of work.

Description

The trapunto quilting with closely stitched waves with a symmetrical design of stylised flowers and leaves, C scrolls, divided into two with a narrow border, each half faces in the opposite direction, the back with the tranpunto work folded back and attached to cotton, the bottom with similar but deeper panel, white cotton ties to sides.

Length 4 ft; 1.2 m

Width 1 ft 6 in; 45 cm widest

Condition

There are some areas of wear where the cord can be seen emerging at the ends of rows. Ask for photos. White items are always rather difficult to photograph, but close up photos should give you a very good idea. One tie missing.

Comments

The narrow border divides the valance part of the bedcover from the top.
